Registration of outsider imams is a must: CM Himanta

GUWAHATI: The State Government is preparing an SOP (standard operating procedure) for imams and madrassa teachers coming to the state from outside. According to the SOP, such imams and madrassa teachers will have to register their names in the government portal.

Reacting to the arrest of two imams for their involvement in jihadi activities, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "I appeal to the Muslim community of the state to report to their nearest police stations if they see any unknown imams or others. The police will verify their antecedents. We will issue an SOP for imams and madrassa teachers under which they will register themselves in the government portal."

The Chief Minister said, "Our objection is only against unfamiliar madrassa teachers and imams. They are using some madrassas as their shelters, and we have to find those madrassas."

He further said, "Six people entered Assam from Bangladesh to web a 'jihadi net' in the state. The police arrested one of them, and the other five are absconding. Our operations against jihadis will continue."

The two imams arrested in Golapara yesterday – Abdus Subhan and Jalaluddin Sheikh – according to police sources, have a link with the jihadis arrested from the Morigaon district recently. The police busted five jihadi modules and arrested 35 people in the past three months.

According to sources, a section of imams is on the police radar. When the police started their operation against jihadis, a few imams went 'missing'. The police have been on their trail.
