GUWAHATI: Assam's Transport Department is losing a huge amount of revenue each year because many people from the state register their commercial vehicles in neighbouring states, lured by low registration fees and other motor vehicle taxes.

According to sources in the Transport Department, due to registration of commercial vehicles owned by residents of Assam in Nagaland alone, the annual revenue loss suffered by this state is around Rs 200 crore. The sources said that there are around 20,000 commercial vehicles in Assam which are registered in Nagaland. The revenue loss for the Transport Department is around Rs 80,000 per annum per vehicle by way of taxes and other revenue, the sources said. This means that the annual loss in revenue is around Rs 160 crore. If 20 per cent GST is added per vehicle, then the amount comes to another Rs 34 crore, the sources pointed out.

The Assam-based vehicles which are registered in Nagaland and other neighbouring states include dumpers, multi-wheeled trucks and other heavy vehicles, the sources added.
