Remarks against PM: Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani brought to Kokrajhar

KOKRAJHAR: The Kokrajhar Police arrested Jignesh Mevani, the MLA from the Vadgam constituency of Gujarat, and brought him to Kokrajhar police station today. The police arrested the MLA for his insulting remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Acting on an FIR lodged at Kokrajhar police station by BJP's BTC EM Arup Kumar Dey, a Kokrajhar police team led by Additional SP Surjeet Singh Panesar left for Gujarat on April 20 and brought Mevani to Kokrajhar today. The police produced Mevani before the judicial court in the evening.

The Gujarat MLA circulated insulting remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his Twitter account, terming him as 'worshipper of Godse as his God' on April 18 last. He twitted that Modi, the 'follower of Godse' in a three-day visit to Gujarat, should appeal to the people for peace and harmony in Himmat Nagar, Khambhat and Beraval in the state.

The Kokrajhar police station registered a case vide no. 183/2022 under section -120 (B)/153 (A) /295 (A) /504/505 (a) (b) (c) (2) of IPC R/W sec-66 IT Act on April 19 last.

The lawyer Mevani told the media that the bail petition had already been applied and hoped that he would be released on bail soon.

On the other hand, Congress members of Kokrajhar staged a protest in front of the Kokrajhar Police Station, saying the arrest was illegal. The district Congress demanded the early release of Jignesh Mevani without any condition.
