GUWAHATI: The State Coordinator of NRC has directed the Deputy Commissioners of all the 33 districts of Assam to remove the "illegal" entries in the final NRC (National Register of Citizens) within November 30.

The step has been taken after some DCs reported to the NRC authority that some illegal entries were noticed in the final NRC that was published on August 31, 2019. Such illegal entries fall in four specific categories — 'Declared foreigners', 'D Voters', 'Person whose case is pending in the Foreigners Tribunals (FTs), and also descendents of the above three categories. According to rules, names of such people are not eligible for NRC.

Sources informed that there are approximately 5,000 such entries in the final NRC.

The latest order, dated October 28, further directed the DCs to first carry out physical verification of such people and then remove their names from the final NRC. The DCs have been also told to report the progress of the name-deletion work latest by November 30.

Meanwhile, the NRC authority has already forwarded some such "illegal" names to the DCs. However, the NRC authority also directed the DCs to ensure that additional "illegal" names are struck out from the final NRC lists of the respective districts.

Talking to The Sentinel, NRC State Coordinator Hitesh DevSarma said, "The RGI (Registrar General of India) is yet to notify the NRC."

Altogether 3,30,27,661 people applied for inclusion of their names in the final NRC (through 68,37,660 applications). While 3,11,21,004 applicants were found eligible for inclusion in the final NRC, a total of 19,06,657 were found ineligible.

The process of receiving NRC application forms had started in the last part of May, 2015 and it ended on August 31, 2015.
