GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma called upon the students to represent a new Assam and grab the opportunities that new Assam offers, from semiconductors to green energy and IT to ecotourism. He announced Rs. 250 crore for the holistic development of the university.
Delivering the 32nd convocation address of Gauhati University today, the Chief Minister said that over the last decade, Assam has been pursuing a path of progress where the students are increasingly becoming catalysts to reap the dividends of the state’s pursuit in the field of new-age technology. Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, who is the Chancellor of the University, chaired the convocation.
The Chief Minister advised the students not to indulge in emotional rhetoric, but they should be guided by conscience and reason to tread the future in the areas of 21st-century technology. He said that the students should represent a new Assam which, in the next two decades, will be more developed than Maharashtra and Karnataka.
The Chief Minister said that alongside the nation’s progress, Assam is also transforming into a land of peace and prosperity. He emphasised that with positive thinking and collective effort, Assam is on its way to becoming one of the strongest states in the country.
The Chief Minister also emphasised the need for a new generation of students who are innovative with entrepreneurial skills and are eager to embrace the challenges and build the future through start-ups. He said that the dreams and creativity of the students are the foundation of innovation, as the New Assam needs the energy of the youth who dare to dream big and push their limit to scale the sky. He assured the graduates that the state government is working assiduously to create ample opportunities for them to pursue their dreams in Assam.
Besides conferring honorary doctorate degrees upon Dr. Amal Chandra Kataki, former director of B. Borooah Cancer Institute; Tapan Saikia, honorary director of Oncoscience, Jaslok Hospital and Research Institute, Mumbai; and Chowna Mein, deputy chief minister of Arunachal Pradesh, the university conferred bachelor’s and master’s degrees to 3,593 students. 148 students were conferred PhDs.
