GUWAHATI, July 31: Violence against women has shown an increasing trend in Assam, with 385 cases related to atrocities from 2010 to 2015 filed in the Assam State Commission for Women.

Records available with this reporter stated that 68 cases of bigamy, 66 cases related to dowry, 45 cases of rape and various other crimes were registered with the SCW.

However, the rate of disposal of cases by SCW has been slow compared to the number of cases filed. Out of 198 cases of different crimes against women filed in the Commission in 2015, only 102 cases were disposed of.

The number of cases of domestic violence is the highest among all categories of crimes against women in the state since 2005.

Besides undergoing physical abuse, women in rural Assam have been found to be facing verbal abuse by their husbands or in-laws for not bearing a child.

Sources said many cases were reportedly registered in the districts of Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia, Darrang, Udalguri, Kokrajhar and Sonitpur.

Records further stated that 1,852 cases of rape, 73 cases of human trafficking, 208 cases related to dowry deaths, 9,553 cases of cruelty by husband, 5,068 cases of kidpping of women/girls and 3,362 cases of molestation were recorded in the State in 2015. The number of such incidents has increased manifold in the State since 2005.
