Rs 1.5 lakh grant for Bihu committees

GUWAHATI: In order to put an end to Bihu organizing committees seeking forceful donation from businessmen for Rongali Bihu celebration, the Assam Government will now pay a grant of Rs 1.5 lakh to Bihu organizing committees.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday announced that Bihu organizing committees which are at least 10 years old and which hold Bihu functions in the first week of the Bohag month, would get Rs 1.5 lakh grant from the government. He said that the Deputy Commissioners would be bringing out the list of all such Bihu organizing committees in their respective districts.

"The government has taken this step so that Rongali Bihu festivities can be organized without taking any donation from businessmen. The beleagured business community is already facing problems due to the pandemic. Businessmen have suffered losses and in such a situation, they should not be pressurized by Bihu committees to pay a donation," said Sarma.
