GUWAHATI: The Opposition MLAs on the first day of the budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly, disrupted Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria’s speech in the Assembly today over a Maharashtra MLA’s alleged dog meat comment.

The Assam Governor was addressing the House when the Congress MLAs demanded to know what action had been taken by the Assam Government against the Maharashtra MLA Omprakash Babarao alias Bacchu Kadu, who had reportedly proposed in the Maharashtra Assembly that stray dogs be sent to Assam to control their rising population, as they are consumed by locals in the north-eastern State.

The Congress MLAs said that this was a breach of privilege by the MLA and he should be made to apologize for his remark in the Assam Legislative Assembly. The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLAs also supported the Congress’ demand. Nosiy scenes were witnessed as the Opposition MLAs shouted slogans and marched to the well of the House.

As the Opposition MLAs continued to disrupt the proceedings, the Assam Governor concluded his speech. The Opposition MLAs later staged a walkout.
