Sahitya Akademi announces Bal, Yuva Puraskar to 4 Writers from Assam

Guwahati: The Sahitya Akademi on Wednesday announced the names of winners of Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar and Bal Sahitya Puraskar, 2025. Four writers from Assam were declared as winners of the two prestigious awards in the youth and children’s literature categories.

The awardees include Surendra Mohan Das and Binay Kumar Brahma for the Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar, while Suprakash Bhuyan and Amar Khungur Boro have been named for the Yuva Sahitya award.

In the Bal Sahitya Puraskar category, Surendra Mohan Das was named for his contribution to children’s poetry in Assamese through his work Mainaahatar Padya.

Binay Kumar Brahma was chosen for his collection of stories in the Bodo language, titled Khanthi Bwswn Arw Akhu Danai.

For the Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar, Suprakash Bhuyan has been selected in the Assamese language category for his short story collection Kuchiyanama, while Amar Khungur Boro received the award for the Bodo poetry collection Ang Asur.

Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma extended his congratulations to the winners from Assam on his X handle, saying, “Congratulations to all the four winners of the Sahitya Akademi Bal Puraskar and Yuva Puraskar in Assamese and Bodo languages. These achievements will inspire the next generation of writers to turn their thoughts into literary pieces which will be cherished by all.”

Announcing the awards, the Akademi said in a statement, “The Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi in its meeting held today, under the Chairmanship of its President, Sri Madhav Kaushik, approved the selection of 23 writers who were selected for the Yuva Puraskar and 24 for Bal Sahitya Puraskar on the basis of recommendations made by the jury comprising three members each in the concerned language in accordance with the rules and procedure laid down for the purpose.”

This year, the number of winners for the Yuva Sahitya Puraskar was one less than those for the Bal Sahitya Puraskar, as the Akademi highlighted that there are no winners in the Dogri language in that category.

Each winner will receive a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cash award of Rs 50,000 at a special function scheduled later this year.
