SAKP Stages Statewide Demonstration Against Citizenship Bill

GUWAHATI: The Sadou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP) staged three-hour statewide protests against Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 from 11 am to 2 pm on Wednesday. Under the aegis of the 52 district committees of the organization carried out the agitation in the district and subdivision headquarters across the State.

In Guwahati, the Parishad members organized the programme centrally at Dighalipukhuripar.

The Parishad president in-charge, Bhupen Baruah said that “the organization demands that the Central and the State governments should stop all moves to bring in the Citizenship Bill in the Rajya Sabha.”

Pointing out that “the law-and-order situation in the State has already been adversely affected by the steps taken by the governments”, the organization further stated that “both the governments would be responsible for any deterioration of the situation if the government continues with its attempts over the Bill.”

The SAKP demanded that “all clauses of the Assam Accord be implemented in word and spirit.” It also pointed out, “All foreigners irrespective of caste, creed and religion must leave Assam.”

“We’ll never accept the government’s attempts to issue citizenship on grounds of religion as it goes against the very spirit of the Constitution of India. The Government of Assam must follow the examples of the governments of Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Manipur, that have already taken a firm stand against the Bill,” the organisation added.

Stating that “we’ll stand with the masses”, the SAKP leader added, “We’ll further intensify the stir against the Bill.”

Among those present during the sit-in demonstration here were the chief advisor of AASU Sammujal Bhattacharya, AASU president Dipankar Nath, AGP leaders and other prominent citizens.
