Sarusajai Stadium and Nehru Stadium in Guwahati to be converted into quarantine centres

GUWAHATI: To combat the threat rising from COVID-19 infection, the Assam government has decided to set up two large quarantine centres with capacity of 1,000 persons each in the city. While one quarantine centre will come up at the Sarusajai Stadium, the other will =-be set up at the Nehru Stadium on the B Barooah Rd. These announcements were made by Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after he inspected the preparations to tackle COVID-19 at Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital (MMCH) here on Wednesday.

He further said, “Presently, we are simultaneously working at two stages against coronavirus. The first is ‘social distancing’; and in this regard we are taking all necessary steps to make the people aware of this very important step to prevent the deadly virus.

“The second stage is to develop the infrastructure at a fast pace. In this regard, we have added 30 additional ICUs (intensive Care Units) at the GMCH (Gauhati Medical College Hospital) till Tuesday. At the same time, we have decided to totally dedicate the MMCH, leaving aside the gyneocology department, for the treatment of coronavirus patients. We are going to set up nine to 10 more ICUs there.”

Dwelling on the other infrastructures, the Health Minister stated, “We’ve also converted the Sonapur Hospital into a specific corana-treatment complex. Here too, we’re keeping aside the gynaeocology section.”

He added: “Moreover steps are on to also utilize three other hospital for the treatment of corona-infected people. These are the IDSP Hospital at Kalapahar, Model Hospital at Singimari, and the Government Ayurvedic College & Hospital at Jalukbari.

Already, the Chabua-based ‘Tata Referral Hospital’ has been handed over to the Health authorities by its management. It will also be used for the COVID-infected persons, the Minister pointed out, adding, “We’re trying to keep 2,000 beds in various hospitals across the State exclusively for such patients.”
