Scanty rainfall continues in Assam; drought-like situation likely

GUWAHATI: Scanty rainfall continues in parts of the State, creating a possibility of a drought-like situation.

An official at the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) at Borjhar said that the State received about 16 per cent below-normal monsoon rainfall. He said that the State experienced around 700 mm rainfall between June 1 and July 25 this year. The total quantum of rains during this period is 16 per cent below-normal level. While 13 districts received scanty rainfall, 13 others had normal rains.

"During this time of the year, Assam receives massive quantum of rainfall as the south-west monsoon remains at its peak. But this time the weather condition is a little different. But the State is expected to get adequate rainfall this month," the official said.

The RMC predicted that moderate rains/thundershowers are very likely to occur at most of the places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura and at many places over Arunachal Pradesh in the next 14 hours. The Guwahati city will have a generally cloudy sky with one or two spells of rains or thundershowers. The maximum temperature is most likely to be 33°C on Monday.
