GUWAHATI: Even as the final phase of the Assam Assembly poll is still to go, the Congress-led Mahajoot is in a celebratory mood for what they say 'sure win' for them.

Leaders of the Congress, AIUDF, Anchalik Gana Mancha, CPI, CPI-M, CMI-ML, Jimochayan (Deori) People's Party and the Rashtriya Janata Dal were present at a joint press meet in Guwahati on Sunday.

Addressing the media, AICC's Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in-charge Jitendra Singh said, "We've done well in the first and second phases of the poll. We're going to do well in the third phase as well.

"The language used by the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister baffled us. They did a negative campaign without specifically saying as to what they did in the past five years and what they'll do now, if voted to power.

"They were silent on the major issues like unemployment, policies for youth and women. What they emphasized the most is religious polarization of voters."

AICC spokesperson Prof. Gourav Vallabh said, "We'll win 101 seats. The Grand Alliance will sweep the Assam Assembly election."

APCC president Ripun Bora said, "Right from the word go for the campaign, the BJP was bent on polarizing the voters in the State. However, the voters of the State didn't heed to their plea. Rather the people accepted the 5-Guarantees of the Congress."

MP Ajit Bhuyan said that the BJP evaded major issues during the campaign. The people of the State voted for the Mahajoot.

CPI leader Munin Mahanta, Deven Dutta of the CPI(M), Bibek Das of the CPI(ML), Abdul Kader of the AIUDF, Sonarul Shah Mustafa of the RJD, Mahesh Deori of the Deori People's Party were also present at the press meet that was also attended by MP Pradyut Bordoloi and CLP leader Debabrata Saikia.

Leaders of the BPF and the Adivasi National Party, however, failed to turn up to the press meet.
