Silapathar attack: AGP stages massive protest

GUWAHATI, March 16: The Asom Ga Parishad (AGP) workers on Thursday staged massive protests across the State in protest against the Silapathar incident where the office of the AASU was allegedly vandalized by Nikhil Bharat Bangali Udbastu Samany Samitee (NIBBUSS) activists.

Trouble erupted at Siapathar on March 6 when unidentified miscreants pelted stones on a NIBBUSS procession as it passed by the AASU office in Silapathar town. NIBBUSS had organised the rally to demand unconditiol removal of D (doubtful) voter tag on Hindu Bengalis.

Assuming that AASU members had thrown the stones, the processionists attacked the AASU members gathered in front of their office and ransacked the office.

The AGP demanded immediate arrest of NIBBUSS president and the main accused of the incident, Subodh Biswas. They also demanded scarping of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, which aims to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshi migrants.

In Guwahati, hundreds of AGP workers staged protest demonstration at party headquarters. Former Chief Minister Prafulla Kr Mahanta, AGP general secretary Ramendra rayan Kalita vice president Dileep Bora also participated at the protest. The Kamrup district committee of AGP staged demonstration in front of DC office at Amingaon , which was attended by party general secretary Kamalakanta Kalita, Nurul Hussain, district president Jyotiprasad Das and a large number of party workers.

AGP general secretary Kamalakanta Kalita said that government should take strict action against the forces which have hurt the sentiment of the indigenous people of the State.

“The AGP is committed to work for the protection of the existence of the indigenous people of Assam. The party will continue to protest against the conspiracy hatched by certain forces to extinct the existence of the indigenous people of Assam,” Kalita said.  

He also said that government should immediately withdraw the Citizenship (Amen dement) Bill, 2016, which will pave the way to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshi migrants.
