GUWAHATI: The universities in Assam will start four-year degree courses simultaneously with three-year degree courses, in sync with NEP-2020 (National Education Policy-2020). This system with multiple exit and entry options for students will be effective from the 2023–24 academic session onward.
At present, the state universities have three-year (six-semester) degree courses with or without honours.
The universities in the state are doing their own in-house activities for the preparation of their new curricula in sync with NEP-2020.
According to the Department of Higher Education, if a student exits the course after the completion of the first and second semesters (one year), he or she will get a certificate. If a candidate exits the course after the completion of four semesters (the first, second, third, and fourth or two years), he or she will get a diploma certificate. If a student completes the fifth and sixth semesters (three years), he or she will get the degree without honours. Such degree-passed students who want to undergo the seventh and eighth semesters, either for a degree with honours or a degree with honours and research, will have to secure an average of 7.5 in all six semesters.
The three-year (six-semester) degree-passed candidates can also get the facility to undergo postgraduate courses.
Meanwhile, the students will have the option of multiple entry and exit for four-year degree courses. After his or her exit, a student can continue the course later. However, such students will have to complete the four-year degree course within seven years.
