Singphos can cement ties with Southeast Asia: CM Sarbananda Sonowal

GUWAHATI: “The initiatives taken by the government to bolster ties with southeast Asian countries can be augmented by the Singpho community as they are residing not only in Northeast but also in various Southeast Asian countries like Myanmar, Thailand, etc. Members of this community are easy going and very strong spiritually and culturally.”

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said this while speaking as the chief guest at the Singpho ethnocultural festival 36th Shapawng Yawng Manau Poi at Margherita on Friday.

Saying that the Singpho community had been enriching the cultural identity of the greater Assamese society shaped by Swargadeo Cholung Sukapha, the Chief Minister highlighted the vivacity and exuberance of Singpho traditional dances and songs as an indication of the cultural wealth of the community. He also urged the Singphos to play an active role in taking forward the state in all spheres.

Announcing an amount of Rs 25 lakh for the socio-economic uplift of the Singpho community, the Chief Minister said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central Government had been taking steps to bring rapid development to Assam and the Northeast by forging close ties with Southeast Asia through the Act East Policy. He called upon the young generation to work hard and acquire knowledge and skills to increase their viability to capture opportunities in the global forum. He also termed Margherita as the melting pot of various tribes and communities and underlined the importance of the place as a border town.

Union Minister of State for Food Processing Rameswar Teli, Arunachal Pradesh MLA Somlung Mossang, chief of Singpho community Dichanong Singpho and others were present at the programme, a release said.
