SILCHAR: The Assam Police headquarters summoned Cachar SP Ramandeep Kaur and the in-charge officers of ten police stations and outposts of the district in connection with the Burmese supari syndicate. On Thursday, the headquarters reportedly quizzed SP Kaur.

Talking to the media today, SP Kaur said that the headquarters called in-charge officers of police stations situated between Dholai bordering Mizoram and Gumrah bordering Meghalaya to Guwahati.

The SP claimed that she and other police officers had gone to Guwahati primarily for information exchange about the syndicate and to interrogate a person hailing from Cachar arrested in Guwahati for his alleged involvement in the supari syndicate.

The moot point is: The supari syndicate would not have thrived in Cachar had the police authorities been vigilant there.

She further said there would be strict operations against all types of syndicates now. She claimed that the proposed SOP (standard operating procedure) would help smoothen the legal trading of coal and local betel nut.

"The higher authorities gathered some vital information, and to verify these, we were summoned since the district is used as the corridor," the SP said.

Before formulating an exclusive coal-and-betel nut-trading SOP for the Barak Valley, State police swung into direct action, she said. On Friday, the police raided the residence of Haji Nizamuddin, a prime suspect of the 'Burmese supari' syndicate at Noapara, Katigorah and arrested him. The police opened blank fire as Haji reportedly tried to escape. Cachar police raided houses in Silchar, Dholai and Bhagabazar. The police raided the house of one Jakir Hussain in the Chamragodam area in Silchar town. They detained a few more people for their alleged involvement in the supari syndicate.

SP Kaur said that the smuggling racket of Burmese betel nut began its operation once again using the Barak Valley as the corridor, and the government instructed the police to launch a massive drive against the syndicate.
