SSUHS Bans Seductive, Revealing, Micro-Mini Costumes

GUWAHATI: Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS) has imposed strict dress codes for its faculty, officers and staff to maintain “the highest standards of conduct and decorum” at the varsity premises.

The dress codes banning seductive, transparent, micro-mini, tight fitting, T-shirts and party attires, has generated widespread reactions and responses among faculty members, students and staff of six medical colleges affiliated to the SSUHS.

“Is it a move to curtail the freedom of choice on what to wear or what not? I wonder as to why the SSUHS has to impose such dress codes,” a doctor at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital said.

An official circular issued by the Vice Chancellor of SSUHS, Dr Dipti Deka on Friday imposed the ban on wearing various outfits including walking shorts, pedal pushers, leggings, tights and jogging pants. The circular has even banned wearing of slippers and sandals by males within the varsity premises.

According to the circular, the use of too much costume jewelry should be avoided.

The Vice Chancellor in her circular has stated that in implementation of the dress codes, exemptions will be allowed only on the grounds of religious affiliation or creed or any practice in relation thereto, physical disabilities and other analogous circumstances.

The circular has warned that disciplinary actions will be initiated against those violating the circular.

“The SSUHS strives to maintain a workplace environment that is well functioning and to maintain the highest standards of conduct and decorum, as officers and faculty have to deal with medical college students, faculty, administrative and other officials, visitors and dignitaries. As part of that effort, it is required that all male and female faculty, officers and staff should be attired in an appropriate, formal, clean, modest and decent manner in the university premises,” the circular said.
