GUWAHATI: The stage is set for the formation of a new regional political force under the joint patronage of the AASU (All Assam Students Union) and the AJYCP (Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad).

Sources informed that the name and ideology of the party will be announced shortly, adding that organizational work for the proposed political force will commence within a week's time. The conveners' committee at the State-level will form the district-level committees in consultation with various like-minded organizations.

The AASU and the AJYCP had formed a 16-member advisory panel representing various sections of the society to examine the pros and cons of the political move. In its 45-page report, the panel expressed the need for an alternative political force. It also suggested the formation of such a party including the indigenous people — the non-tribal communities, the minorities, and also the tea tribes among others.

The panel's report specifically noted that this new force must work for the masses by opposing the present political heavyweights including the BJP, the AGP, the Congress, and also the AIUDF.

Meanwhile, AASU general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi informed The Sentinel that the reception committee has been already constituted for the next general conference of the students' organization at Duliajan in upper Assam.

The AASU conference is scheduled to be held in the last part of October or the first part of November. A number of its leaders are slated to retire from this students' organization in this conference. On the other hand, some among them may join the proposed regional political formation which will formally make its entry in the State's political arena after this AASU general conference.
