GUWAHATI: What could be termed as an ambitious plan to ease traffic congestion in the city, the State PWD will construct the longest flyover in Assam.

The proposed four-lane flyover will start from Maligaon and end by crossing the Kamakhya Temple gate on the Assam Trunk (AT) Road with an extended arm to the road leading to Pandu Ghat. The Assam PWD (Roads) will construct this flyover at an estimated cost of Rs 383.72 crores under the 'State Owned Priority Development (General) Scheme'. It is targeted to be completed within three years from the date of construction.

The flyover will start from near the existing Railway flyover at Maligaon (from the Jalukbari end). It will cross over Maligaon Chariali, and the Kamakhya Temple gate to end at the AT Road leading towards Bharalumukh. This four-lane flyover will be of around 2.5 km.

The extended two-lane arm of the flyover, towards Pandu Ghat, will be 500 meters long. Once completed, commuters can use the extended arm to reach the Kamakhya Temple atop the Nilachal Hill. This two-lane flyover will also be connected with a new road that is being constructed from Pandu to the temple.

The PWD has already floated tenders for the flyover project and the process is in the final stages. The foundation-laying ceremony of the new flyover is expected to be held either in the last part of October or the first part of November .
