Stress laid on providing skill training based on local needs

GUWAHATI: Skill Employment and Entrepreneurship Department Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah today held a discussion with skill training providers under the Assam Skill Development Mission. Here he laid stress on providing training to youths keeping local needs in mind. He also subtly hinted that no malpractices in the name of providing skill training would be tolerated.

Baruah held a discussion with around 150 training providers under the Assam Skill Development Mission. He emphasized upgrading the skills of youths based on local needs, like the bell metal industry of Sarthebari, the firework industry of Barpeta and other local cottage industries.

He said, "Majority of the youths have to leave their native place as they do not find suitable jobs as per their skills in their own place." He further said, "Assam needs to become a hub of skilled people in the coming years."

The minister also discussed other issues with the training providers like relevant job roles, skill gap study, district-wise employment demand analysis etc. The training providers also apprised the minister of the various problems they face will imparting training.

Sources said that it is often alleged that training providers do not provide quality training as per guidelines. They also do not furnish details of where the trainees have been employed after their training. Many skill training centres are allegedly functioning without the required infrastructure and expertise. Sources added that during the discussion with the skill training providers, the minister hinted that no malpractices in the name of skill training would be tolerated. He also emphasized providing quality skill training to meet the objective of the Assam Skill Development Mission.
