GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has given four weeks’ time to the state and central governments, as sought by them, to respond to the PIL (18/2023) on the protection of Deepor Beel. The court gave the time with the rider that the respondents will have to submit the latest status report of the projects undertaken pursuant to the earlier directions given by this Court as well as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) by the next hearing on April 27, 2023.

The PIL was filed by Pramod Kalita and two others. In its earlier petitions, a division bench of the Gauhati High Court had directed the Assam Government to protect the Deepor Beel area as said in its affidavit and commission the under-construction solid waste management plant located nearby at the latest by July 1, 2023.
