GUWAHATI: The pig farmers of West Guwahati's Azara Revenue Circle are tense as over 100 of pigs in Keotpara and Jongkatbori areas died of an unidentified disease in the past 10 to 12 days.

To examine the unidentified disease, a team from KrishiVigyan Kendra (KVK), Azara of AAU (Assam Agriculture University) rushed to the affected areas. The team is headed by DrElakhiDeka, a veterinary specialist. The team includes a veterinary officer and two field assistants from Azara Veterinary Hospital. The team collected samples from the pig carcasses and sent them to the College of Veterinary Science, Khanapara for examination. According to reports, the team suspects that the pigs might have died of African swine fever. However, it will take 72 hours to know the final result.

The team also organized an awareness programme to make farmers aware of the disease. DrDeka stressed preventive measures for swine fever and the process to bury pig carcasses to avoid further transmission.
