GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court on Tuesday listed a petition challenging the recent notification issued by the Assam Government on increasing the minimum wage of tea workers in the State. The petition will be heard by the High Court on March 15.

The Indian Tea Association (ITA) and 17 other tea companies have filed the petition. The Court has also asked the Assam Government not to take any coercive action against the tea companies till the March 15 hearing.

The BJP-led alliance government through a notification recently raised the minimum wage of Rs 167 per day by an "interim amount" of Rs 50, taking it into Rs 217 per day.

The ITA and tea companies have made a plea before the High Court that hike would lead to a massive hike in the cost of production for the tea industry which is already facing severe financial crunch.
