GUWAHATI: The Education Department will conduct a Teachers' Eligibility Test (TET) in October this year to make more candidates eligible for the recruitment of teachers.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said, "Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had discussed the issue of conducting TET with the Education Minister on Monday. Among other things, the meeting decided to hold TET this October for the recruitment of teachers. The move is part of BJP's pre-poll promise of giving jobs to one lakh youths in one year. We will publish the advertisement for TET shortly.

"The candidates who have already qualified the TET earlier are eligible for applying during the teacher recruitment process. The candidates qualifying the TET set for October this year will be eligible for the posts of teachers.

"While D El Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) is a must for becoming an LP School teacher, B Ed (Bachelor of Education) is compulsory to be an ME School teacher. The final year candidates of D El Ed and B Ed courses receiving admit cards are also eligible for sitting the TET. The department will fill up 10,000 vacancies in elementary schools and 12,921 vacancies in secondary schools. We will conduct a special TET for ST (H) candidates later.

"The department will distribute appointment letters to some 113 higher secondary (HS) school teachers on August 20 in sync with its completion of 100 days. As many as 547 other candidates will also get appointment letters on compassionate ground in the Education Department.

"We encourage the colleges to increase 25 per cent of their seat capacities to accommodate the increased pass percentages of students in HSLC and HS examinations. We ask the colleges to give preference to candidates from SEBA (Board of Secondary Education, Assam) and AHSEC (Assam Secondary Education Council) in the increased seats. Private schools like Sankardev Sishu Niketan, Jatiya Vidyalayas that have faculty members and infrastructure will get preference if they apply to upgrade their institutions to higher secondary ones. A survey is also underway to ascertain the number of 'provincialized' high schools that the department can upgrade as higher secondary institutions.

"After a thorough examination of the seat situation, we have gauged that the state will have a shortage of around 57,000 seats for HSLC -passed candidates. However, we hope to bridge the gap with the additional measures we have taken."
