Three media persons arrested on charges of extortion in Namrup

NAHARKATIA: Three media persons of Namrup have been arrested on a number of charges and legal action initiated against them. The trio identified as Bitu Boruah, Hiren Gogoi and Samiron Boruah was sent to Dibrugarh Jail on Wednesday.

Based on an email received at the office of the DC, Dibrugarh, an FIR was registered as Namrup PS case No 62/20 u/s 120B/342/353/387/419/468/34 IPC on Tuesday. This relates to an incident where some media persons of the Namrup area were found stopping vehicles to check documents citing authorization by the DC, Dibrugarh.

There have been allegations that they frequently stop such vehicles and demand money from truck drivers. The incident was recorded and the video has been seized.

Moreover, on April 28, 2020, a suo moto case was taken up against these media persons vide Namrup PS Case No 63/20 u/s 74 JJ Act r/w Sec 23 POCSO Act. This relates to a news report prepared by them regarding Namrup PS Case No 61/20 u/s 342 IPC r/w Sec 4 of POCSO Act. In that news report, the identity of a minor victim was clearly shown, in abject violation of law.
