GUWAHATI: To provide immediate financial aid to family members of the martyrs of the Assam Agitation and those grievously injured during the movement when they face any financial crisis, the Assam Government has decided to implement three schemes under the Assam Agitation Welfare Trust.

The Assam Agitation Welfare Trust was formed with an initial corpus of Rs 5 crore and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had recently announced that an additional amount of Rs 5 crore would be provided to the Trust. The Trust will now have a total corpus of Rs 10 crore at its disposal. The Assam Government and the representatives of the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) look after the Assam Agitation Welfare Trust.

Regarding the three schemes, the government has asked the AASU to prepare the draft. The government will study the draft and give final shape to the schemes, said sources in the Assam Accord Implementation Department. They further said that the corpus fund of Rs 10 crore will be deposited in the bank and the Trust will get an annual interest of Rs 38 lakh on the principal amount. While the principal amount will not be touched, the annual interest amount will be utilized to provide financial succour to family members of the martyrs of the Assam Agitation.

During the six-year long Assam Agitation, 860 persons laid down their lives.
