Haflong: The Umrangso coal mine tragedy of January 6, 2025, came to a close today after all the remaining five decomposed bodies of trapped coal mine workers were recovered. More than fifty rescuers comprising NDRF, SDRF, GR, and the Army had been operating the rescue operation since January 7th. Despite various challenges, these rescuers have recovered the bodies of trapped miners from the flooded rat hole mine Kalamati in the Umrangso area of the Dima Hasao district.
The rescuing agencies asked all the relatives of the miners to identify their own people.
A DDMA official, while refuting reports of discontinuation of the rescue mission by a section of the media, said that the rescue operation had been continuing 24x7 by NDRF, as a result of which the bodies were recovered today.
Mention may be made here that on January 6, 2025, at least nine mine workers were trapped in a flooded rat-hole mine near Kalamati in Umrangso. After tireless efforts of rescuers, four lifeless bodies of mine workers were recovered earlier, and today, the remaining bodies were brought out of the ill-fated mine.
