GUWAHATI: The 180 employees working in the NRC (National Register of Citizens) offices in Guwahati and elsewhere in the state are in troubled waters. They have not been getting their salaries for the past five months. However, the employees are attending to their duty regularly.

When the NRC update was underway, the RGI (Registrar General of India) funded all NRC-related expenditures, including employees' salaries. However, after the publication of the final NRC on August 31, 2019, the RGI informed the State Government in 2021 that it would no longer fund NRC expenditure. The RGI funded NRC expenditure till March 2021.

After that, the State Government paid the salaries of the NRC employees for a few months. However, the NRC employees have not been getting their salaries for the past five months.

According to sources, the salary matter of NRC employees is under the consideration of the Finance Department.

The NRC employees often contact the Finance Department but to no avail. Uncertainty continues to haunt them. The NRC employees played a crucial role during the NRC update exercise.
