Uncertainty hovers over Bajali district formation

Dispur waiting for nod from Delimitation Commission

GUWAHATI: The Assam government's move to create the new district of 'Bajali' now hangs in the balance as it has not yet received the nod from the Delimitation Commission. This is despite the fact that the State Cabinet took the decision to upgrade the Bajali Sub-division under Barpeta district on two occasions. Mentionably, the State Finance Department also sanctioned the creation of 10 posts for the new administrative division. Besides, 85 additional posts were also created to pave the path for the proposed district of Bajali.

Sources in the General Administration Department (GAD) stated that though it had also moved the Delimitation Commission over the district-formation issue on two separate occasions, there has been no reply from the Central panel.

The Central government panel has restricted the creation of administrative entities especially when it is carrying out the exercise to re-constitute the Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies across Assam.

Earlier, there was a restriction on the formation of any new administrative units also from the Registrar General of India (RGI), which is under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). It was primarily due to the Census exercise that was proposed at that time. But as the Census exercise could not be undertaken due to the COVID pandemic, the RGI subsequently relaxed its restriction up to December 31, 2020.

At present, the State has 33 districts.
