GUWAHATI: A division bench of the Gauhati High Court, led by Chief Justice Ashutosh Kumar, today asked the Assam government to file its affidavit in support of the eviction drive it is carrying out in Uriamghat in the Golaghat district before August 14, 2025, when the petition will be heard again. The Court also asked the petitioners to submit all documents in support of their claims to have rights in residing at the site.

As many as 75 people facing eviction threats in the Uriamghat area moved the High Court with two writ petitions. The single bench of the High Court allowed seven days for the petitioners to stay on the land, during which the administration has been asked not to carry out any eviction drives against them.

The petitioners, however, moved a division bench that heard the petition today.

Advocate AR Bhuyan of the petitioners said, “The petitioners challenged the eviction notice, as the area under eviction has not been demarcated. It is not certain if the land in question is forest land or revenue land. How come the government carries out eviction drives without knowing the exact demarcation of the land? Apart from this, the eviction being carried out at Uriamghat is against the law of natural justice as per the Constitution of India.”
