GUWAHATI: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that the government is going to make it mandatory for private English medium schools like Don Bosco, Saint Mary's etc., to impart lessons in the vernacular medium till class-III.

Reacting to the controversy over the decision to teach Science and Mathematics in the English medium from class-III to class-XII in government and provincialized schools, Sarma said that the government will never allow closure of Assamese medium schools in Assam. The government is merely trying to effect a change for the better by introducing English medium classes in a couple of subjects, he said.

"I don't like to say it, but the fact is that the majority of Assamese medium schools in Lower Assam are running due to the enrollment of students from the minority community," he said, adding that the modification in medium of instruction in two subjects is being introduced to attract all sections of students.

The Chief Minister said that apart from English medium classes in some subjects in vernacular medium schools, the government is going to make vernacular medium instruction mandatory at the elementary level in private English medium schools as well.

Sarma further said that the National Education Policy 2020 will be implemented in toto in Assam and expressed the hope that the majority of students will resume taking admission in vernacular medium schools.
