GUWAHATI: "Violence against women is a social malaise, and it has become a global phenomenon today. Every Law and Act will fail unless the public becomes aware of this," said State Finance and Social Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog today. She spoke at Assam state social welfare Auditorium here on International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women.

She said that like western countries Indian parents should discuss sex education with children, and schools should also spread social awareness from the primary level.

Neog was worried over the fact that despite signing first for the sustainable development goals, Assam is showing a higher graph of maternal mortality and infant mortality. Around 56,000 children are still malnourished in the state, he said.

Neog signed off by saying that she is waiting for that day when people won't have to discuss 'Women Empowerment. That will be the day when women will get empowered.

Director of Social Welfare Bibhash Modi, Women Commission Chairperson Hemaprabha Borthakur and UNICEF specialist Suresh Parmar were also present.

"God is within her, and she will never fall," says Bibhash Modi. He stressed gender equality and thanked UNICEF for its constant support. He said that policies will be made for the safeguard of women and funds will very soon be shared among districts in such a way that it reaches the block levels.

He further requests every woman from all corners to dial the women helpline number '181' without hesitation in case of any harassment.

Notably, this campaign has been organized by the Directorate of Social Welfare, Assam, in collaboration with UNICEF. It is a 16-day programme aimed at stopping violence against women and girls. Various workshops will be conducted throughout the campaign focusing mainly on 'Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace' and 'Protection of Women from Domestic Violence.
