JORHAT: Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani on Saturday appealed to the people of Assam to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming Assembly polls for more development work across the State. Irani made this appeal at Maibela, Nakachari of Mariani Assembly constituency in Jorhat district while campaigning for BJP candidate Ramoni Tanti.

Irani reached Maibela along with Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and Aparajita Bhuyan, president of BJP State Women's cell. This constituency has been represented by Congress MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi for three consecutive terms; and he is contesting from this seat for the fourth term.

Addressing a poll rally at Maibela playground in Mariani, Irani said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal have taken up several projects for the development of the masses. The deprived section of the society trusts the Prime Minister and the BJP. People should vote for the BJP to continue the development works taken up by the government."

Keeping an eye on the tea garden votes in the Constituency where they always play a key role in the polls, Irani said, "The BJP government has been working tirelessly for the people in tea gardens across the State. The BJP government is planning to set up 120 high schools in the tea gardens across the State. This move will be a first in the State's history. Moreover, the BJP government has taken up several projects for the development of the workers in the tea gardens."

Coming down heavily on the Congress, Irani said that during the Congress rule, the people of the country witnessed rampant corruption in all sectors.
