GUWAHATI: The ECI (Election Commission of India) will provide 'Voter Information Slips' to each electorate. This move will facilitate the voter to know the serial number of electoral roll of his/her polling station, time and date of poll, and other necessary details. The ECI took this decision on February 26, 2021.

Earlier, the ECI used to provide 'Photo Voter Slips', which also contained the respective photographs of the electorates. However, the 'Voter Information Slip' or 'VIS' will not have photograph of the electorate. However, the VIS will not be allowed to be used as identity proof by the voters. Notably, the ECI discontinued the use of also the 'Photo Voter Slip' as an identity proof on the poll day with effect from February 28, 2019.

Sources in the Election Department, Assam said that the VIS will be distributed house to house by the BLOs (Booth Level Officers) at least five days before the date of polling. This exercise — meant for all the enrolled electors — will be supervised by the District Election Officers (DEOs).

The three-phase Assembly election in Assam will be held on March 27, April 1, and April 6. Notification has already been issued for the first two phases. The notification for the third phase polls will be issued on March 12.

Assam has 126 LACs (Legislative Assembly Constituencies). Of these, 47 LACs will go to polls in the first phase, 39 in the second phase and 40 LACs will go to polls in the third phase. Counting of votes will be held on May 2.
