GUWAHATI: With the detection of 147 new corona cases on Monday, there are 539 COVID-19 positive patients in the State.

The rise in corona positive cases in Assam seems to gain pace with every passing day. It took 37 days to cross the 50 mark, ten days to cross the 100 mark, only four days to cross the 200 mark, two days to cross the 300 mark, two days to cross the 400 mark and just one day to cross the 500 mark.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Himanta told the media, "If the people of the State stranded in other States of the country have to return, they should do so before June 10. Since 14-day quarantine is mandatory for such people; such people will remain under quarantine till June 24. Since floods in Assam are likely by the first week of July, we want to close the chapter of tackling a large number of people for corona by June 30 so that we can engage the officials for relief and rescue operations in the flood-affected areas. If the situation is not tackled in a planned way, we'll be in troubled waters.

"So far, we've discharged 62 COVID-recovered patients. Of them, one is a 13-year-old heart patient. She was discharged from GMCH on Monday. Her mother was also with her in the same room for 14 days. However, the mother hasn't been infected. We allowed the mother to be with her during the quarantine period on humanitarian ground as the girl couldn't stay alone.

"Now there are 445 active cases under treatment in various hospitals across the State."

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), on Monday, expressed serious concern over the spike in COVID-19 cases in the north-eastern States with the highest being registered in Assam. "The increasing number of cases in Assam, Meghalaya and even Tripura is really a matter of concern. We have asked the State governments to follow the guidelines from the Health Ministry from time to time," said a senior Health Ministry official.
