We’re Ready For Every Eventuality: DGP Kuladhar Saikia

GUWAHATI: “We’re ready for every eventuality” is what State DGP Kuladhar Saikia has got across while briefing the media on the preparedness of the State police force for the general elections in the State.

DGP Kuladhar Saikia briefed the media at the State Police headquarters in Guwahati on Monday. In his presence, Assam Police Nodal Officer-cum-ADGP (law and order) Mukesh Agarwal said: “There’re over 25,000 licensed arms in the State, and over 20,000 of them have been deposited to the police, as of now. The process is underway. Ever since the model code of conduct (MCC) was issued by the Election Commission of India, as many as 32 illegal arms have been seized in the State by the police.”

On the execution of non-bailable warrants (NBWs), the ADGP said, “It’s a continuous process as courts keep issuing such warrants. As of now 6,300 NBWs have been executed. Around 1,400 NBWs are still pending. The process is underway.”

On the strength of security personnel to be deployed during the general election in the State, the DGP said: “With the arrival of 33 additional companies of CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces), we’ve 90 CAPF companies at our disposal for deployment in the poll process in the State. We’re not going to deploy security personnel now on NRC duty for the Lok Sabha poll. They’ll stay put where they are.”

On the security bandobast for the general elections, DGP Kuladhar Saikia said: “We’re ready for every eventuality. Vigil has been intensified in all vulnerable pockets. We’re keeping in touch with the DGPs of the neighbouring States so as not to let violence there escalate into Assam. All superintendents of police have been asked to monitor the social media to check antisocial activities.”
