Will act if TEs axe contractual teachers: Tea Welfare Minister

GUWAHATI: The State Government has made it known to the tea garden owners’ associations that it will take action if any tea garden management releases any contractual teachers working in garden-managed LP schools. The government feels it necessary to spell it out in clear terms in the aftermath of the government’s decision to appoint two TET-qualified teachers in each of the 419 garden-managed LP schools in the state.

Tea Welfare Minister and Labour Minister Sanjay Kishan informed tea garden owners’ associations of this at a meeting in Guwahati on May 30, 2023. Representatives of labourers’ associations, MLAs, and MPs from the Tea Tribe community were also present at the meeting.

Speaking to The Sentinel today, Minister Sanjay Kishan said, "We have already collected the list of contractual teachers working in 419 garden-managed LP schools. We are going to appoint two TET-qualified teachers in each of the 419 garden-managed LP schools in July. It is a historic decision of the state government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. We have informed tea garden owners’ associations of our decision. They cannot release any of the existing contractual LP school teachers working in garden-managed LP schools. They agreed to our proposal at the meeting. We have let them know the consequences of any violation of this stricture as well."

Kishan further said, "It has come to our attention that some tea gardens pay contractual teachers at a daily rate system. We have made the tea garden management known for paying a respectable salary to contractual teachers. The Labour Department will hold another meeting with tea garden owners’ associations for the fixation of salaries for contractual teachers.
