GUWAHATI: "My ideology in the future will always remain the same. I shall follow the philosophy of AASU (All Assam Students Union)," said Lurinjyoti Gogoi – who quit the students' union in its recently concluded four-day conference at Duliajan. He was the general secretary of AASU during the last five-year term.

"During the movement against CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act), I reiterated on a number of occasions that I'd remain amidst the masses and fight for the greater cause of the Assamese people," Gogoi told The Sentinel here on Tuesday.

He added, "I shall never compromise my ideology for personal or political interest. I leave it to the masses to criticize me if I deviate from the stated path."

On the Duliajan conference, he said, "Before the AASU conference, I had stated that the up-and-coming young leaders will lead the students' organization. Therefore, I quit AASU during the conference. I shall hand over the charge of general secretary in the next central executive meeting of AASU to be held shortly."

When asked if he would join the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Gogoi said, "I shall disclose the next step of action after the central executive meeting.

"However, one thing is absolutely clear. My prime agenda will consist of the implementation of the Assam Accord, expulsion of all illegal foreigners, an error-free NRC (National Register of Citizens) besides the other burning issues of the State."

Sources, however, informed that Lurinjyoti Gogoi will join the AJP at its political convention scheduled at Sivasagar in the middle part of December 2020. Significantly, the AJP will initiate a number of important decisions during this convention. These include adoption of the party's constitution and formation of its central committee. Further, It has been confirmed that many former leaders of AASU and AJYCP (Asom Jaitiyatabadi Yuba Chattra Parishad (AJYCP) will be joining this new regional political party. The AJP was constituted at the initiative of both the organizations in September 2020.
