SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today informed that the state will soon have the largest dedicated football stadium in the country, with construction work likely to begin within a week. This grand sporting infrastructure will be the crown jewel in Meghalaya’s massive football-focused development push, which also includes an unprecedented rollout of 50 artificial football turfs across the state by 2027—the highest number in any Indian state.

Unveiling the government’s game-changing vision, Sangma stated,

"Mawkhanu Sports Complex, Mawkhanu. Largest dedicated football stadium So this is the Rs 700 crore Stadium. The work has been allotted. The work will start as mentioned, maybe in a week's time because of the rain condition and all, but we expect that by 2027, we should be able to complete this stadium. And I would like you reiterate that this is going to be the largest dedicated football stadium in the country because other stadiums have got multiple facilities. This is a dedicated football stadium and as of now, it is the largest dedicated football stadium in the country."

The CM further added, “We are coming up with smaller infrastructure throughout the state. As we speak, 25 artificial turfs are being constructed and another 25 are being sanctioned. So by 2027, we expect that we will be having 50 artificial football turfs in the state, which would be the highest any state has.” He emphasized that this isn’t just an infrastructure project—it’s a full-scale grassroots revolution. “I’m sure that this kind of infrastructure will allow different kinds of development for talent in football across different parts of the state.”

Further outlining the plan to fuel youth participation and community engagement, Sangma said, “We are also focusing on creating leagues at the district level, block level, and even at the village level, because we want to engage the children. The children should feel excited that the weekend is coming and there’s a league match that’s going to happen. I'd like to go and prepare and practise for that. And that’s how the culture of sports and football can be developed.”

With the largest football stadium in India on the horizon and dozens of new turfs under construction, Meghalaya is poised to become the beating heart of Indian football—where dreams are nurtured from the ground up and the spirit of the game is built into the very fabric of the state.
