Will centrally monitor school activities daily: Education Minister Ranoj Pegu

GUWAHATI: The State Government has initiated the process of setting up a Shiksha Samiksha Centre to centrally monitor the activities of every school in the state daily.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu informed the Assembly of this today. He said, "We are amalgamating schools, rationalizing the teacher-student ratio and boosting school infrastructure. We will now monitor the activities of teachers, students and others. We will take more measures if necessary after monitoring school activities daily. Though many legislators demand the introduction of science and commerce streams in the colleges under their constituencies, the reality remains that the enrollment of students in these two streams is fewer. Only 14 per cent of students opt for the science stream in colleges in the state. Seats of science stream lie vacant in most of the colleges in the state. We need to see how reasonable it is to open more science colleges in the state. We need to provide students with the opportunity to get the facilities to undergo science and commerce streams. As many as 107 colleges in the state have a science stream where most of the seats lie vacant."

BJP MLA Phanidhar Talukdar wanted to know if the government has any binding for teachers of government schools to make their wards enrol in government schools only. In his reply, Pegu said, "The government does not have any such thought. If quality teaching becomes a reality in government schools, enrollment will follow suit. There are examples of government schools where parents rush to enrol their wards. Our focus is on quality education in government schools."
