Will help NCHAC with funds to tide over crisis: CM Himanta

HAFLONG: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today assessed the damage caused by landslides in Haflong. He inspected the landslide-ravaged areas, including a road at Sarkari Bagan area damaged badly.

The Chief Minister said that the government both at the Centre and the state would help the NCHAC (North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council) with adequate funds to tide over the present crisis. He further said that the government was working on finding a permanent solution to avert heavy rainfall-induced landslides

The Chief Minister asked the PWD to take appropriate steps for the reconstruction of the road at Sarkari Bagan at a fast pace. He also asked the department to look for an alternative alignment to save the stretch of the road from future damage due to landslides.

Since landslides rendered several people out of their homes, the Chief Minister also visited temporary relief camps in Lower Haflong High School and LP School and interacted with the inmates taking shelter there. He reviewed medical and other facilities and asked the Deputy Commissioner to look after the needs of the inmates and help them to repair their houses. There are 149 inmates in both camps.

The Chief Minister also met family members of the three people who were killed in the landslide triggered by heavy rains at Hokai Pungchi Jeme village. Sarma interacted with them and offered his condolences. He assured them of all help from the government at this difficult time. The government has already released ex-gratia payment to the next of kin of the deceased.

The Chief Minister also took a preliminary review of the destruction caused by landslides at Haflong and other parts of the Dima Hasao district. He stressed the immediate resumption of full-scale transportation in the district and laid emphasis on the restoration of roads damaged by landslides. He also said that a Central Team would visit Dima Hasao on May 27 to assess the extent of loss caused by landslides in the district.

NCHAC CEM Debolal Gorlosa, MLA Nandita Gorlosa, NCHAC Chairperson Ranu Langthasa, Executive Members and MACs, Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Samir Kumar Sinha, and others were present in the review meeting, a press release said.
