PRO-TALIBAN COMMENTS TRIGGER ANGER

GUWAHATI: Comments by some Muslim individuals supporting the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan have triggered a great degree of unease, resentment and anger within the community in Assam.

Many prominent Assamese Muslims have come down heavily on those supporting the Taliban and welcomed the arrest of 14 such supporters.

Noted writer and political analyst Haidar Hussain said it is really unfortunate to see some Muslims supporting the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan by living in a peaceful state like Assam. He said the majority of these supporters do not know anything about Afghanistan and the Taliban.

"It seems that they are supporting the Taliban just because they follow Islam. But Islam cannot support the Taliban's way of taking over a country. Stupidity and ignorance of these supporters have crossed all limits when they made comments on social media that the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan is the beginning of the Muslim's rule in the world," Hussain said.

Hussain said the pro-Taliban comments can create social unrest and defame the entire Muslim community. "Our first identity is Assamese and then India. Islam is our religion which preaches only peace. How could we support the Taliban? It is good that the Assam Police have taken timely actions by arresting 14 Taliban supporters," he said.

Renowned surgeon Padma Shri Dr Illias Ali said the takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban is an internal matter of that country. "We are not foreign affairs experts. India is closely monitoring the situation in Kabul. At this juncture we must wholeheartedly support the Indian Government's stand on Afghanistan," he said.

Noted lawyer and social activist Nekibur Zaman, while welcoming the arrest of 14 pro-Taliban supporters, urged the State Government to remain vigilant on many other fundamentalist forces that can exploit the situation. He questioned the silence of the AIUDF and Jamiat Ulema even after the arrest of one of their leaders on Saturday for pro-Taliban posts on social media. "The supporters have defamed the Muslim community as a whole. The Muslims should boycott them," Zaman said.

Many other Assamese Muslims are making comments on their Facebook and Twitter accounts urging the community members not to support the Taliban.
