The Axom Jatiya Parishad was formed on September 14, 2020.

A joint initiative of AASU and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), the regional party was formed just months ahead of Assam Assembly polls 2021.

AJP is the second regional political party formed by AASU after AGP. Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) was formed by AASU in 1985 after the signing of Assam Accord in the same year.

Eminent personalities of Assam including national award-winning filmmaker Jahnu Barua and Sahitya Akademi awardee and former Rajya Sabha member Nagen Saikia and former Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary were part of the founding committee of AJP.

Senior AGP leaders Pabindra Deka, Jagdish Bhuyan are among some prominent political leaders who have joined AJP.

Pabindra Deka has been appointed as AJP’s working president. Deka is a former Assam Minister and three times legislator from the Patacharkuchi constituency of Barpeta.

Jagdish Bhuyan is a former AGP MLA from Sadiya constituency of Tinsukia. He was also a BJP Member. Bhuyan is now the coordinator and general secretary of the AJP.
