Looking at the ongoing Avian Influenza and the reports of poultry, crows and migratory birds deaths in the five states of the country, the Assam is also stepping up vigil to monitor bird movements and unusual deaths in forest areas.

Bird Flu in India

Bird Flu or Avian Influenza in India outbreak was reported in the first week of 2021, when confirmed sample of dead birds were found. Over thousands of migratory birds, crows and poultry died due to the virus outbreak in the states of Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over the last 10 days.

In Kerala, 1,700 ducks have died due to the virus and crows have died in scores in Madhya Pradesh. 1,800 migratory birds are found dead in Himachal Pradesh. Lastly, more than 450 dead crows were found in Rajasthan.

Temporary Ban on Import of Poultry in Assam

The Assam state government has temporarily banned poultry import through the western border of the State as a precautionary measure in view of the outbreak of avian flu. The notification was issued by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department of the state.

Import and export of Poultry

Assam imports about 8-10 tonnes of poultry from states like West Bengal and Bihar while exports a lot to state like Meghalaya and Mizoram.
