Salmara South is a town located in the South Salmara district of Assam. It falls under the Dhubri Loksabha constituency and it is the 22nd constituency of Assam. Wazed Ali Chaudhary of INC is the current MLA of this constituency.

Salmara South is a town located in the South Salmara district of Assam. It falls under the Dhubri Loksabha constituency and is situated in the newly created South Salmara district of Assam.

 ASSEMBLY CONSTITUENCY NAME AND NUMBER

Salmara South Vidhan Sabha Constituency is the 22nd constituency of the Assam Assembly. South Salmara is also part of Dhubri Lok Sabha constituency. The sitting MLA of Salmara South is Wazed Ali Chaudhary of the Indian National Congress Party (INC). He won the Assam Assembly election 2016 with a percentage of 54.43% votes.

PARLIAMENTARY CONSTITUENCY

Salmara South constituency falls under the Dhubri parliamentary constituency. The Lok Sabha or the parliamentary constituency does not fall under the category of reserved seats for S.C. or S.T. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Badruddin Ajmal, who represented All India United Democratic Front, won the elections by defeating Abu Taher Bepari from the Indian National Congress.  DISTRICT

Salmara south falls under the newly created South Salmara district of Assam. It is an administrative district of Assam. The district headquarter is located in Hatsingmari village and earlier it was a subdivision of Dhubri district. South Salmara is a comparatively new district that was carved out of Dhubri district in the year 2015 when the late Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi made an announcement of five new administrative districts of Assam.

Geographically the district of South Salmara occupies an area of 568 square kilometres. In the West, it is bordered by Bangladesh West; in the South-East, it is covered by Meghalaya. South Salmara is a plain district with a few small hillocks Bansali, Rangatari etc.; these small hillocks are all situated in the South-Western part of the district. The Brahmaputra flows through the middle of the district from East to West along with its tributaries like Kalonadi, Jinjiram etc., The average rainfall of the district is 2,916mm annually.

There is one sub-division in the district, which is- Hatsingimari. Additionally, there are two revenue circles known as South Salmara and Mankachar revenue circle. As per the 2011 census, the South Salmara district has a population of 555114.

Out of the total population, about 95.2% of people in this district are Muslims, 4.5% are Hindu, 0.3% are Sikh and Christians.

There are around 200 villages that come under the Salmara South Vidhan Sabha constituency. Some of these villages are- Airkata, Baladmara, Balatari, Cherakuti, Charia Gram, Dhadaimari, Dingdina and the like.

ASSEMBLY STATUS

In the 2016 Assembly election, INC's Wazed Ali Chaudhary won the challenge from All Indian United Democratic Front's (AIUDF) Badruddin Ajmal. Wazed Ali Chaudhary got 80066 votes compared to AIUDF contestant Badruddin Ajmal's 63343 votes.

In the 2011 Assembly election, AIUDF's Abdur Rahman Ajmal had routed the INC's Wazed Ali Chaudhary. Abdur Rahman Ajmal got 62254 votes as compared to Wazed Ali Chaudhary's 58498 votes.

The voter turnout in Salmara South in the 2016 Assembly election was 93.41 per cent.

As per the 2011 Census of India, Salmara South had a total population of 274540 people. Out of these, 100% of people live in rural areas, and 0% live in urban areas.

1) In the 1996 Assam Assembly Elections, Wazed Ali Chaudhary from the Indian National Congress party won the Salmara South seat with 43355 votes. He defeated Dewan Joynal Abedin who contested independently.

2) In the 2001 Assam Assembly Elections, Wazed Ali Chaudhary from the INC party won the Salmara South seat with 47329 votes. He defeated Dewan Joynal Abedin who was contesting as an Independent.

3) In the 2006 Assam Assembly Elections, Badruddin Ajmal from the AIUDF party won the Salmara South seat with 55767 votes. He defeated Wazed Ali Chaudhary of the INC party.

4) In the 2011 Assam Assembly Elections, Abdur Rahman Ajmal from the AIUDF party won the Salmara South seat with 62254 votes. He defeated Wazed Ali Chaudhary of the INC party.

5) In the 2016 Assam Assembly Elections, Wazed Ali Chaudhary from the INC party won the Salmara South seat with 80066 votes. He defeated Badruddin Ajmal of the AIUDF party.

In the last assembly election, the Indian National Congress Party candidate Wazed Ali Chaudhary won with a total of 80066 votes with a 54.43% share. Badruddin Ajmal from the All India United Democratic Front Party lost the battle with 63343 votes. Shiraj Hussain from BJP came in the third position by securing 1954 votes.
