Assam: Police Seize Brown Sugar Worth 2.5 Cr At Lumding In Major Drug Bust

GUWAHATI: A big blow to the illicit drug trade was achieved by the state police when a massive consignment of suspected brown sugar was seized and a person apprehended at Lumding in Assam on Thursday.

Reports said 421.86 grams of suspected brown sugar was found concealed in 31 soap cases, which were then seized by police at Lumding Junction in Hojai district of Assam.

The suspected brown sugar was recovered from the Dibrugarh-Howrah express, police sources said.

Officials put the value of the seizure at around Rs 2.5 crores.

During the drug haul, one person identified as Rashidul Haque was also apprehended by the police.

The consignment of suspected brown sugar was said to have been smuggled from Dimapur in Nagaland to Chaparmukh in Assam's Nagaon, police further informed.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on, the source added.

In another sensational catch, police made a huge seizure of Yaba tablets during a routine checking along the Assam-Mizoram border on Tuesday night.

According to reports, Assam Police recovered a stash of Yaba tablets worth over Rs 160 crore from several people travelling in a vehicle.

Six persons have also been arrested in connection with the huge drugs seizure by the Assam police.

The six persons, including a woman, were arrested.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered in connection with the seizure by the police in Cachar district of Assam.

Another breakthrough against illicit drug smuggling was, meanwhile, achieved when another accused was taken into custody by Guwahati police from the city's Garchuk area.

Police recovered 29 containers filled with a suspected narcotic substance from the accused during an operation based on specific intelligence. The accused has been held on charges of smuggling drugs, it was informed.

The accused has been identified by the police as Afzal Ansari, a resident of Jharkhand.
