GUWAHATI: Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (V&AC) sleuths caught the chief engineer (CE) of the GMC, two lat mandals, and a middleman red-handed while accepting bribes on separate operations today. According to sources in vigilance and anti-corruption, the sleuths caught GMC chief engineer Indrajit Bora red-handed while accepting Rs 6,000 from a contractor with the promise of releasing the complainant’s security deposit of Rs 1.60 lakh.

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption received a complaint from the contractor that the Chief Engineer had demanded Rs 10,000 as a bribe from the complainant.

During the search of the residential premises of the arrested accused, the sleuths found cash amounting to Rs 6,93,600, documents relating to 19 bank accounts in the names of the accused and his immediate family members, an Audi A6 car in the name of his wife, and an Innova car, also in the name of his wife.

In another incident, the sleuths arrested lat mandal Azahar Ali Ahmed of Baghbor Circle Office in the Barpeta district while he was accepting bribes amounting to Rs 20,000 today.

The sleuths also arrested the lat mandal of Biswanath Revenue Circle and a middleman. According to sources, a team of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption caught a middleman, Rajesh Tanti, red handed while accepting bribes of Rs 3,000 on behalf of lat mandal Lagan Basowar.
