ULFA (I) cadre apprehended, arms and ammunition recovered from Nagaghat village

NAHARKATIA: One ULFA (I) cadre was apprehended by a joint team of Army and Assam Police from Nagaghat village under Joypur Police Station on May 3.

According to information from police, the apprehended cadre has been identified as Arup Hazarika. Acting on information from previously apprehended cadres Rantu Sonowal and Bitupan Sonowal regarding involvement of Arup Hazarika in many ULFA(I) sponsored activities like recruitment and hoisting ULFA(I) flags in Joypur and Naharkatiya on November 27, 2019 and on confirmation of his location, a joint operation was launched by Indian Army and Joypur Police Station on the midnight of May 3.

After a sustained effort by the joint team, Arup Hazarika, resident of Nagaghat, was apprehended from his residence and further search in and around his house with the help of Army sniffer dog lead to recovery of one 0.22mm pistol with magazine and two rounds.

During the preliminary interrogation, Arup confessed to misguiding youths to join the banned outfit ULFA (I). He was working directly under self-styled lieutenant Abhijeet Gogoi alias Aiseng Asom who was supervising him the activities to be conducted, on whose direction he hoisted ULFA (I) flag on November 27, 2019 at Joypur and Naharkatiya.

With his apprehension, the group of cadres who were involved in a number of ULFA (I) sponsored activities in Namrup, Naharkatiya and Duliajan has almost been apprehended. Joypor police filed a case against Arup Hazarika under the sections of 120B/121/122 Indian Penal Code R/W sec 10/13 UAP Act, 10/25(1)(A) Arms Act. Arup Hazarika was presented before Naharkatia Subdivision court by the police on Tuesday. Court further granted three days remand of the arrested ULFA (I) cadre to Joypor police. On the other hand, the involvement of Arup with the ULFA has shocked his family members. The locals of Joypor Nagaghat have appealed for a fair investigation into the matter.
