Heavy Rains, Schools, Colleges Closed, Trains Disrupted As Cyclone Gaja Crosses Through

Guwahati: Cyclone Gaja arrived and crossed between Nagapattinam and Vedaranyam past midnight on Friday, which also brought along heavy rains and gusting winds. With the passing through of the cyclone, the southern states mostly the southern districts of Tamil Nadu suffered from heavy losses.

Along with the normal day-to-day life, the train services in the delta region too were severely affected. Three trains were detained midway in the region on Friday. The Rameswaram-Chennai express was detained at Thanjavur, the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruchi passenger was halted at Kumbakonam and the Tiruchendur-Chennai express was detained near Thanjavur. Another train, the Mannargudi-Tirupathi Express did not even leave Mannargudi this morning.

Other passenger trains like the ones commuting from Mayiladathurai to Tiruvarur and Tiruchi to Mayiladuthurai are also cancelled for the day. The Tiruchi-Erode passenger was halted at Elamanur near Tiruchi for over 20 minutes as an uprooted tree fell on the track. The train could move only when the engineering staff cleared the tree from the track.
